- Event Description
-
Middlesex County Births of Enslaved Children book contains the following record:
Page: 86
Child: Francis Stout
Mother: Jane
Enslaver of mother and child: Asher Applegate
Location: East Windsor, NJ
Birth date: July 9, 1816
Reported date: August 9, 1836
Clerk: Nicholas Booraem
The birth registration was delayed by twenty years and did not occur until after the deaths of the original enslaver Asher Applegate and his wife Sarah Applegate. Executor Abijah Applegate signed the birth certificate on August 9, 1836, on behalf of the estate of his father Asher Applegate.
The birth certificate did not note whether the child was male or female, and it is assumed that Francis was a male child based on the name, but this has not been definitively confirmed (and the name written could also be Frances). - Event Type
