Huntsville is the name of a historical community in present-day Green Township in Sussex County. The hamlet was established in the mid-18th century when Thomas Woolverton purchased a property and built a stone tavern there. The area was known as Pettit's Mill by the late 18th century (after proprietor Nathaniel Pettit). The hamlet acquired the name Huntsville in the 19th century after Judge Abraham Hunt purchased the mill property.
Huntsville is located where Pequest Road crosses Pequest River. Eighteen-century historical sites in Huntsville include the Huntsville Cemetery and the site of Thomas Woolverton's Tavern, which served as the meeting place for the Sussex County court from about 1755 until a permanent courthouse was erected in Newton in 1765. - Locality
