The West Indies, or the Caribbean, refers to a region that includes several island archipelagos surrounded by the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. Many people of African descent were brought to New Jersey via this region. Some labored on island plantations for years before being taken to New Jersey. Others briefly moved through the region because slave-trading ships often made stops there before heading north to the ports of New York and Perth Amboy.
Whenever possible, people listed in the New Jersey Slavery Records database are linked to specific islands. When broader terms such as "West Indies" or "French West Indies" are mentioned in the documents without specifying an island, the records are linked to the broader West Indies region. - Region
