- Description
-
Newton was a historical township that existed in the southern region of New Jersey from 1695 to 1871. It was the precursor to the City of Camden and several surrounding municipalities. This defunct township is not to be confused with the town of Newton in Sussex County, which is located in the northernmost part of New Jersey.
Newton was originally formed in Gloucester County in 1695. When Camden County was created in 1844, Newton became part of Camden County. Newton began to break apart into other municipalities in the mid-19th century, and the township ceased to exist in 1871. The western part of Newton became the City of Camden, and the eastern part became Haddon township. In the late 19th century, Haddon township further splintered, forming several smaller boroughs, including Haddonfield, Collingswood, Wood-Lynne, Haddon Heights, Oaklyn, and Audubon. Records documenting slavery in any of these modern Camden County municipalities may be filed under "Newton township, Gloucester County" because their territory was part of Newton during the slavery era.
Additionally, note that Petty's Island on the Delaware River was considered part of Newton township from 1783 to 1852. The island is now officially part of Pennsauken. - Locality
