Burlington is a city on the banks of the Delaware River in Burlington County, New Jersey. It was first incorporated in 1693 and was originally the county seat of Burlington County until 1796 (when the county seat moved to Mount Holly). Additionally, during the colonial era, Burlington served as the provincial capital of New Jersey, together with Perth Amboy (the provincial legislature and courts rotated between the two cities). Following the American Revolution, Trenton became the state capital in 1790.
The City of Burlington is surrounded by the municipality of Burlington Township. The city was originally part of the township, but they are now considered separate municipalities. - Locality
